Gary Rowett's Millwall are ready to launch a move for Nottingham Forest midfielder Ryan Yates in January, as per the print edition of The Sun (18 October, page 61).

The 22-year-old was linked with a departure earlier on in the summer but he was retained by the Reds and is now seemingly set to become a key component in Chris Hughton's side.

Yates started alongside Jack Colback in the Nottingham Forest midfield in their 1-0 win over Blackburn at Ewood Park on Saturday, and provided an assist in what was an impressive performance from the Reds academy graduate.

As per the aforementioned report, Millwall failed with a deadline day move for Yates and they are now set to reignite their interest in the new year.

Yates has started three times in the Championship so far this season, and once in the League Cup for the east Midlands side.

Forest's win on Saturday was their first of the season, after a dreadful start to the campaign, losing all four of their games prior to the Rovers clash, ultimately leading to Sabri Lamouchi's sacking.

The verdict

It's not hard to see why Gary Rowett and Millwall are keen on Yates.

He's a hard-working, tenacious midfielder who isn't afraid to do the dirty work, exactly the sort of midfielder that would fit into Rowett's setup at the Den.

However, I can't see the Reds letting go of Yates anytime soon, especially after his stellar performance on Saturday - it's now looking quite clear that he is a player that Chris Hughton likes and wants to keep hold of.
