Sheffield United are close to agreeing a deal to sign centre back Ciaran Clark from Newcastle United, The Telegraph's Mike McGrath has reported.

With the Magpies in a position to invest heavily following their recent takeover, Clark has seemingly fallen down the pecking order at St James' Park.

That is something that has apparently attracted the attention of a number of Championship clubs, with Birmingham, Sheffield United, Middlesbrough and Stoke all recently credited with an interest in the 32-year-old.

Now it seems as though it will be Bramall Lane that proves to be the destination for the Republic of Ireland international for the coming campaign.

According to this latest update, Newcastle and Sheffield United are close to agreeing a deal that will see Clark join Paul Heckingbottom's side on loan for the 2022/23 season.

Sheffield United have already made two senior signings this summer, with centre back Anel Ahmedhodzic joining permanently from Malmo, and midfielder Tommy Doyle signing on loan from Manchester City.

The Verdict

This does look as though it could be a rather good signing for Sheffield United if completed.

While they have already signed Ahmedhodzic, the fact they often play with three centre backs means they may still need some more additions to ensure they have enough depth in that position.

Bringing in Clark ensures they will be doing that, while also securing the services of a player who has plenty of Premier League experience, which could be useful in the Championship.

As a result, this looks like another useful piece of business for Sheffield United, in what has already been an encouraging window for the Blades.
