Championship side face opposition from Celtic and Rangers in transfer pursuit

Derby County are looking to make a move for Sligo Rovers defender John Mahon, but face stiff opposition from Scotland according to reports in the Daily Star, as reported via Derby Live.

Both Celtic and Rangers are thought to be tracking the 19-year-old, who is a Republic of Ireland Under 21 international.

Reports suggest he favours a move to either Celtic or England, with Brendan Rodgers side having already watched him in action for Sligo this week. His side drew 1-1 with Dundalk on Friday night.

It’s reported that Blackburn Rovers are also interested in the 19-year-old, who signed a new two-and-a-half year deal with the Showgrounds in the summer, having signed his first professional contract with them in August 2017.

It’s thought that a ‘six-figure’ sum will have to be paid for his services, despite his relatively small amount of first team experience. Last season he made 24 appearances for the first team, scoring once.

The Verdict

There’s little known about Mahon outside of Ireland at the moment, but the list of clubs coveting his signature suggest he could be a big player in the future.

It would surely be hard to turn down a move to Parkhead, but Derby can offer the opportunity to work with Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole, two of the finest players of their generation.

It would surely be a consideration, if nothing else.
