Barnsley and Peterborough are battling it out to sign Colchester United midfielder George Moncur after both sides had bids accepted for the player, according to Sky Sports.
The 22-year-old was one of a few bright sparks for the club last season as they were relegated to League Two and it now seems imminent that he will leave Essex.
Despite a woeful season for the U’s, Moncur scored 14 goals and claimed 4 assists in 51 games last season and his has attracted the attention of clubs in League One and the Championship for some time.
Both Barnsley and Peterborough reportedly had bids rejected earlier in the summer but seem to have now agreed a fee with Colchester and will hope to convince the former West Ham man to join them.
After beating Millwall in the play-offs, the Tykes will be playing Championship football next, something which may favour them in the race for the highly-rated Moncur.
However, Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony has a reputation for developing young Football League stars before allowing them to bigger clubs, so a move to London Road may be better for his development.
