Sheffield United are demanding £1m for the service of Ryan Leonard, who is attracting interest from Millwall at this late stage of the summer.

The loan transfer window will close later today, with Millwall desperately searching for a replacement for George Saville, who looks set to be heading to Middlesbrough in a £7m deal.

According to a report in the Mirror, Leonard is the player Neil Harris wants to bring in to replace the 25-year-old, but Sheffield United are holding out for a £1m fee for the midfielder.

Leonard, 26, has been with the Blades since January, after Chris Wilder moved to take him to Bramall Lane to boost Sheffield United’s play-off hopes.

However, in his short time in South Yorkshire, Leonard has been limited to just 16 Championship appearances, with only six of those coming in the starting XI.

So far this season, Wilder has handed the midfielder just 60 minutes of league football, with Leonard making three substitute appearances in the Championship.

Last year, as Millwall challenged for the play-offs, Saville was impressive, scoring 10 Championship goal, with his pending departure sure to be a blow.

Harris will be hoping to conclude a deal for Leonard before he signs off a deal for Saville.

The Verdict

If Saville is set to leave for £7m, Millwall should be stumping up the £1m for Leonard, who would be a good replacement.

Of course, the 26-year-old hasn’t found his best level at Bramall Lane, but he’s a good player, as he previously showed at Southend.

Playing regular football, Leonard could be a good Championship midfielder.
