Bristol City are reportedly confident of landing Charlton Athletic striker Lyle Taylor before the end of the January transfer window.

There has been plenty of speculation surrounding the future of the 29-year-old this month after he had a contract offer from the Addicks withdrawn weeks back after taking too long to come to a decision, and it seems it is the Robins leading the charge.

Brentford have also been linked with a move for the forward but according to Bristol Post journalist Gregor MacGregor, it is Lee Johnson and those on the City board who are confident of securing his signature.

QUIZ: Can you name the club these 14 ex-Charlton players are playing for now?

Writing in his Q&A, MacGregor said: "According to our sources, Bristol City have a good chance of landing Lyle Taylor this week. He is set for talks with Lee Bowyer today and depending on how that goes, there could be a switch on the cards."

So far this season Taylor has netted seven goals in 14 Championship games in what has been an injury ravaged first season in the second-tier, although he has still impressed thus far.

The Robins currently sit on the cusp of the play-off places although there is a general feeling among supporters that attacking reinforcements will be needed to secure a spot.

Charlton, on the other hand, are hovering ominously just above a relegation scrap, perched in 20th place, just six points above the drop zone.

The verdict

I think this would be an excellent signing for Bristol City and for a really good price as well.

Taylor may have had injury concerns this season, but scoring seven in 14 second tier games is still impressive, especially in your first season in the division.

If I were a Charlton fan, I think I would much sooner see Taylor leave as soon as possible to give the club plenty of time to bring in a replacement forward if they before the deadline.

Without an out and out goalscorer, the Addicks could really struggle to beat the drop.
