Championship rival reveals how Derby County’s summer arrival will need to adapt

Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Joey Pelupessy has suggested how Derby County summer arrival Mike te Wierik needs to adapt his game to be a success in the Championship.

The 27-year-old has signed a pre-contract with the Rams and is set to join Phillip Cocu’s squad in August.

Derby were keen to sign him in the January transfer window but after complications on Groningen’s side, they were unable to get a deal completed in time.

Te Wierik’s deal with the Dutch club expires this summer and he has signed a three-year deal with the East Midlands outfit earlier this year.

The central defender is experienced in his home nation, having made more than 200 appearances in the Eredivisie, but the move to Pride Park will be his first foray outside of the Netherlands.

Speaking to The Athletic, Pelupessy, who is a close friend of te Wierik, suggested how the defender would have to adapt his game to be successful.

He said: “The intensity and the pace of the Championship is different. In Holland, it’s a little slower.

“Over there you have a little more time on the ball. He needs to prepare for that. The opponent will press you for 90 minutes and of course a lot of pressing from the front so for a defender like him he’ll need to get used to not having that extra second on the ball.”

Te Wierik will likely be keeping a close eye on how the Rams finish the 2019/20 campaign.

Cocu’s side have turned their fortunes around in the New Year and are now just five points away from the play-offs with nine games remaining.

WHO IS THE PLAYER?

The Verdict

The 27-year-old is an experienced defender in the Eredivisie but it will be interesting to see how he adapts to life at Derby.

His arrival looks like a shrewd bit of business by the Rams, who need central defenders following Richard Keogh’s sacking.

If he can have anywhere near the sort of impact another pre-contract signing, Wayne Rooney, has had, you feel he will be a success.
