Championship midfielder makes intriguing admission about summer Leeds United speculation

Huddersfield Town midfielder Lewis O’Brien admits that he was surprised by how much of a distraction reports linking him with a move to Leeds United were in the summer.

With Leeds searching for midfield reinforcement during the summer, O’Brien was heavily linked with a move to Elland Road.

Indeed, Huddersfield chairman Phil Hodgkinson even claimed that his side rejected a £13million bid for the midfielder from the Whites.

Have any of these 30 former Huddersfield Town players ever played abroad?

Ultimately though, no deal materialised, and O’Brien has since gone on to sign a new four-year contract with Huddersfield, securing his future at The John Smith’s Stadium until the end of the 2024/25 season.

Now however, it seems as though the midfielder did still have his head turned by those links with Leeds when the transfer market was open.

Reflecting on that speculation during the summer, O’Brien told Yorkshire Live: “You think it’s easy to block out and that you’re not thinking about it but it’s always there in the back of your head every day.

“You’ll see something or someone, or one of your friends or family is messaging you about something. But personally I tried to block it out as much as I could and just concentrate on my football, which I do with anything.

“No matter’s what’s happening in life, what’s going on, I just try and focus on my personal game and try to play the best for the team that I possibly can.

“It was a massive weight off my shoulders when I signed my new contract. In the interview I did then I did go into further detail about how I felt about it and that it was the right step in my career. It was a massive weight off my shoulders and just allows me to play freely again for Huddersfield.”

Recent reports have suggested that Leeds could revisit their interest in the 23-year-old with a £10million bid in the January transfer window.

The Verdict

You can’t blame O’Brien for having his attention caught by those links with a move across Yorkshire.

The chance to play in the Premier League is obviously going to appeal to just every players, so that interest in that speculation surrounding him and Leeds is understandable.

However, judging by these comments, it does seem as though O’Brien was still pleased to put pen to paper on his extended deal with Huddersfield.

As a result, it will be intriguing to see just what stance he takes, if those links with Leeds are to remerge again in January.
