Alex Mowatt has admitted that he did not expect to leave Leeds United during the January transfer window, according to Leon Wobschall of the Yorkshire Evening Post.

Barnsley completed a permanent deal for Alex Mowatt in late January as the talented youngster penned a two and a half year deal with the Tykes.

The left-footed central midfielder has only managed two appearances for Barnsley so far because he was sent off on his debut against Wolves.

Mowatt had played well over 100 times for Leeds since breaking through the academy and into the first team but found himself out of favour under Garry Monk this season.

After winning Leeds' Player of the Year in 2014/15, the former England youth international was tipped for a bright future at Elland Road but was sold to Barnsley in January.

Speaking to Leon Wobschall, the 22-year-old said that he was surprised at the permanent move and expected a loan deal.

However, he has acknowledged that he was not happy as a bit-part player and felt the move to Barnsley was right for him at the time.
