Championship manager makes comment on Leeds United’s away fans

Reading manager Jaap Stam stressed the importance of the Leeds United game for both teams on the official site.

Leeds are clearly having teething problems under new manager Paul Heckingbottom.

They were convincingly beaten 3-0 by league leaders Wolves in their last game; getting a result against Wolves is tough but the manner of the performance seems to have angered Leeds fans.

Stam will be hoping his side use this opportunity to take advantage and come away with some crucial points as they fight relegation. He indicated how the importance of this game will affect the approach of both teams: “The Leeds now is a very important one – not only for us, but for them as well.  Both teams will be playing to win, so we’ll need to show the same energy and more on Saturday.”

He also highlighted the importance of the fans for the game due to the large following that Leeds bring to games:

Leeds always bring a lot of people and make a lot of noise.  That’s what we’ve seen when we’ve been there and when they’ve come here. Hopefully our fans can try and make more noise than they can, and hopefully we can do better on the pitch than them.”

The Verdict

Stam seems to have targeted this match as a big opportunity for three points for his side. His comments on the fans is an obvious attempt to bring them on side and unite the entire club in their quest to avoid relegation.

This is the best time to play Leeds, so it’s smart for Stam to stress it’s importance in order to pile the pressure on his opponents.

Reading do have games against other sides threatened by relegation, but Stam isn’t willing to rest on his laurels. 35 points is nowhere near the amount needed to avoid relegation, and he definitely understands that.
