Reading FC manager Jaap Stam has responded to reported interest from Celtic in defender Liam Moore, by claiming that ‘you’re not going to sell your best player’, if you want to progress as a club.

The Dutchman’s words were shared on Twitter by Reading Chronicle journalist Courtney Friday, with the former Manchester United defender’s words suggesting a clear stance on any potential transfer.

Moore has impressed at the heart of the Royals defence since joining the club on a permanent deal from Leicester City last summer, with his displays helping the club to a playoff final appearance at Wembley in May.

The 24-year-old has been one of the most consistent players in Stam’s squad, with his form now attracting the interest of Brendan Rodgers.

Celtic are likely to be competing in the Europa League in the new year with their Champions League hopes hanging in the balance, and Moore could be tempted to head north of the border in his quest to further his career.

However it appears Stam has no intention to sell, and Moore is likely to remain a Royals player beyond the winter window.

The Verdict

Moore is vital to Reading’s success, and is one of the players making up the spine of the team assembled by Stam.

Celtic will tempt the player, with European football and an increased wage packet sure to be on offer in Glasgow, but Stam will remain resolute unless a monster offer comes in for the player.

Interest in Moore is testament to how far the player has come since being considered not good enough to make the grade at Leicester, and the young defender looks destined to play in the Premier League in the near future.

Whether that is with Reading, or via Celtic remains to be seen, but a deal looks unlikely.
