Championship manager discusses possible January move for Derby County man

Swansea City manager Russell Martin has played down the chances of his side moving to sign Tom Lawrence from Derby County in the January transfer window.

It was recently reported by the Daily Mail that the Rams are willing to sell Lawrence when the market reopens, in order to raise some much needed funds amid their current financial challenges.

That had led to claims that Swansea, along with Bournemouth, Stoke and West Brom, are interested in signing the Derby captain.

Now however, it seems as though a move to the Swansea may be unlikely for Lawrence come the turn of the year.

Responding to those claims linking his side with a move for Lawrence, Martin was quoted by Wales Online as saying: “I had a text asking about him last night. I’ve not had one conversation about him at all with anyone. So I don’t know where that’s come from.

“Maybe someone behind the scenes has mentioned it, but I’m pretty sure I would have heard about it if it had come up. He’s a good player, but it’s not a name that’s been discussed with me.”

As things stand, Lawrence is into the final year of his contract with Derby, meaning he could leave the club for free at the end of this season.

Which club do these 22 rarely seen former Derby players now play for?

1. Chris Maguire

Since the start of the campaign, Lawrence has scored two goals and provided three assists in 15 league games for Derby.

The Verdict

This could still be one to keep an eye on despite these comments from Martin you feel.

Lawrence is still a useful option at Championship level for certain teams, and sides may well be aware of the chance to swoop for certain Derby players, due to their current financial situation.

As a result, even if Swansea are not interested in Lawrence, there is still a chance of other clubs battling for his signature once the window reopens in January.

Should that be the case, it would be interesting to see if Martin was to change his stance here to avoid missing out, since there is still plenty of time for him to do that.
