Aston Villa face a battle from Swedish club Ostersunds for the signature of promising Chelsea youngster Charlie Colkett.

The Mirror is reporting the Championship side are keen on a loan move for the talented 22-year-old but could be gazumped by the European outfit.

A 12-month loan that could eventually turn into a permanent deal is the offer both clubs have enclosed to the Premier League side.

After spending the first half of the season on loan at League One Shrewsbury, the Mirror also understands that the Chelsea youngster is keen on a move away from Stamford Bridge to continue to get regular first-team football.

Ostersunds, sixth in the Swedish League, have been quick to move in for Colkett in the hope that he would relish a move abroad and that his skills could help their push up the table.

But Villa have entered the battle with Dean Smith ready to offer the youngster the necessary game time he is looking for at this stage of his career.

A deal could be agreed this month for a loan until the January 2020 before any potential permanent agreement becomes official.

The verdict

If Colkett leaves the Premier League side, it will be another of a long list of young players to leave the London club to get first-team football.

Chelsea are renowned for producing and bringing through talent within their academy, but the first-team path is somewhat blocked, so many of the younger players on their books are forced to leave to get competitive football to develop.

The 22-year-old will be another number in the Chelsea machine that looks to escape to have a career and not be stuck in the U23s or face several loans out without the prospect of featuring for the first team.

It’s a good move by Colkett to be open to leaving Stamford Bridge again, and possibly for good to start to play on a regular basis.
