Championship duo Brentford and Wigan Athletic are set to go head-to-head in the battle to sign out of contract Gillingham defender John Egan, according to The Sun journalist Alan Nixon.
Egan will depart the League One club this summer after making 81 appearances since his arrival in 2014, and his performances for the Gills have attracted interest from the second tier.
The central defender began his career at Sunderland but left, having not made his debut for the first-team, to join Gillingham in time for the 2014/15 campaign where he has played ever since.
A no-nonsense defender, Egan has built up a rapport with the Gills faithful and they will no doubt be upset to see one of their star players depart for another team, despite punching above their weight in League One last season.
Both Brentford and newly promoted Wigan will be looking to bolster their squads ahead of the 2016/16 campaign, and Egan would be a shrewd free transfer for any team who manages to get a deal over the line.
