Championship duo Brentford and Brighton are amongst a number of clubs eyeing Newcastle United's 6ft 4 defender Mike Williamson, according to Sky Sport's Keith Downie.

Williamson is a target for Brentford and Brighton

A number of clubs are after the defender's signature with Brighton and Brentford the two most likely candidates. A move to the Sky Bet Championship seems likely for the 31-year-old, after a long career at Newcastle appears to be coming to an end.

The 6ft 4 defender made 150 appearances for the North-East club as he cemented himself as a first-team regular until consecutive injuries rendered him a squad player. Recently, he has struggled for first-team action and is consequently, likely to move away from Newcastle United.

However, in a Tweet informing fans of the moves progress, Keith Downie has stated that Williamson has reported to training on transfer-deadline day despite the fact that a number of Championship clubs are interested in his services.

But with interest mounting and the temptation of first-team action likely to be a factor in the defenders decision, it isn't unlikely that Williamson will be moving to the Championship before the end of today's action.

Brentford and Brighton both have high expectations for this season as they both strive for a top-six place and Williamson would be a quality addition to either of the two sides defensive set-ups.

Whether or not he will end up at either of the two clubs remains to be seen, as interest from elsewhere may become more prominent as transfer deadline day rolls on.
