Championship defender emerges as Sunderland transfer target

Sunderland are eyeing a move for Tom Naylor, with the Burton Albion defender emerging as a Chris Coleman transfer target, as planning for Sky Bet League One begins.

Relegation from the Championship was confirmed on Saturday afternoon for Sunderland, with Burton coincidently the team to send the Black Cats into the third tier.

Nigel Clough’s side picked up a 2-1 victory at the Stadium of Light to send Sunderland down, with Coleman’s attention seemingly quickly turning to the summer.

According to sources close to the Roker Report, Naylor is on Sunderland’s radar, with Coleman lining up a move for the 26-year-old defender, who will be available on a free.

Naylor has made 35 appearances for Burton this season, scoring four goals for the Brewers.

The versatile defender has played in 31 of Burton’s Championship fixtures, but has been unable to prevent Clough’s side slipping to the brink of relegation along with Sunderland.

Sunderland and Naylor are edging closer to an agreement ahead of the summer, with the 26-year-old seemingly heading for the exit door at the Pirelli Stadium.

Coleman is keen to address Sunderland’s central defensive problems, with the futures of Lamine Kone and John O’Shea unknown.

The Verdict

Relegation is going to be difficult to take for Sunderland, but it is good to see that Coleman is preparing himself for a huge summer and moving early.

Naylor has built up a wealth of experience, and taking a defender of the 26-year-old’s quality into League One, has to be seen as a positive for Sunderland.

It’s going to be a busy summer of rebuilding at the Stadium of Light and this news will be welcomed amongst a frustrated fanbase.
