As was expected following Newcastle United’s promotion to the Premier League, there is set to be an exodus of players, as Rafa Benitez shapes his squad ahead of the Magpies’ return to the top-flight, with the Spanish manager looking to shape a squad capable of establishing themselves amongst the elite.

One player who is expecting to leave St James’ Park this summer is Daryl Murphy, just 12-months after joining Newcastle from Ipswich Town, ahead of their sole season in the Sky Bet Championship.

Murphy’s spell with Newcastle can be seen as nothing more than a success, and despite finding himself playing a supporting role to Dwight Gayle for large parts of the campaign, the Irishman chipped in with some important goals against the likes of Huddersfield Town.

At 34, Murphy is coming to the end of his career, but showed last season why he would be an excellent addition to any Championship club this summer, with his goalscoring ability there for all to see – should he be given a first-team opportunity.

Prior to joining Newcastle, Murphy was prolific for Ipswich, scoring over 50 goals for the Tractor Boys in the Championship.

Last season, Murphy scored just six goals, but also made only seven starts for Newcastle, making his goals to game ratio exceptional by Championship standard, particularly after finding himself limited to substitute appearances.

Murphy showed last season what an asset he can be in the Championship, and with the 34-year old striker seemingly on the way out of St James’ Park, there will surely be a host of second-tier clubs looking to sign him up, with hope he can fire them to promotion.
