A number of Championship clubs are interested in signing Northampton Town goalkeeper David Cornell, HITC have reported.

Cornell has impressed with his performances in League Two so far this season, where Northampton currently sit tenth after four wins and four defeats from their opening nine league games of the season, with the 28-year-old featuring in all of those fixtures.

It is thought that a number of scouts from the Championship have been monitoring the Welshman's progress so far this season, with the fact that his contract is set to expire at the end of the current campaign meaning sides are interested in a cut-price deal for the goalkeeper.

Having graduated from Swansea's academy, Cornell made just a single League Cup appearance for the Welsh club joining Oldham following his release from The Liberty Stadium in the summer of 2015, with the goalkeeper joining Northampton a year later.

Earlier in the summer transfer window, it was reported that Championship outfit Reading were interested in signing Cornell, although the Royals later went onto sign Rafael Cabral from Sampdoria to add to their goalkeeping options instead.

In total, Cornell has made 80 appearances in all competitions for Northampton.

The Verdict

This is an interesting one.

When you look at his competitive history, you might argue that Cornell would not be a regular at Championship level were he to make the step up to the division, given where he has spent the majority of his career so far.

However, with a number of second-tier sides apparently interested in the 28-year-old, it does seem as though he could be a reliable alternative for a number of Championship sides.

Indeed, having already missed out on an opportunity at this sort of level during his time with Swansea, Cornell himself would surely be keen to make the step up to this level, in order to prove he is capable of competing in the Championship.
