Middlesbrough are set to complete the signing of veteran goalkeeper Shay Given on a free transfer from Aston Villa, reports HITC Sport.
The Republic of Ireland international signed for Villa in 2011 and despite finding himself frozen out under Paul Lambert, Given was offered a reprieve by new boss Tim Sherwood towards the back end of last season.
Given had managed to dislodge Brad Guzan in the first-team following a series of inept performances from the American stopper.
However, it now seems as though Sherwood will allow Given to rejoin Boro, the club where he spent time on loan during the 2013/14 season.
Last season’s beaten Championship play-off finalists are in the market for a goalkeeper as boss Aitor Karanka looks to add competition for regular first-choice keeper Dimi Konstantopoulos.
The 39-year-old is a veteran of over 500 career appearances and has also played 128 times for his native Republic of Ireland in a glittering career.
