Wigan are now leading Celtic in the race to sign Sheffield Wednesday striker Jordan Rhodes in a potential January loan deal, according to Football Insider.
It has been reported that Wednesday are not keen on Rhodes departing Hillsborough this month amid speculation linking him with a move to Celtic, but it has now emerged that Wigan have made an enquiry regarding the 29-year-old’s availability.
Rhodes was struggling for game time at Hillsborough earlier this campaign, but he then netted a hat-trick against Nottingham Forest in just his second league start of the season, and this has seen him feature in the five Wednesday matches since then.
However, it appears that Rhodes’ recent return to the side has not prevented any of his potential suitors from making a move for the attacker, with Wigan having reportedly made the first move ahead of Celtic in the race to lure him away from Hillsborough.
The Latics are currently sat 22nd in the Championship table which means they are battling against relegation this campaign, and they could now turn to Rhodes to help towards this goal, despite the fact he has failed to score in 12 of his 13 games this term.

Rhodes is a player who clearly possesses the ability to cause problems for Championship defences – as was seen against Forest – but he has not been able to deliver goals on a consistent basis this campaign.
Garry Monk decided to give the frontman a run in the side following his impressive hat-trick, but he has not been able to follow up this display, and this could be viewed as something of a red flag by any side pursuing his services.
However, Wigan might well be prepared to take the gamble on Rhodes given they need to do everything possible in order to survive the drop this campaign, and there is a chance that Rhodes could re-discover his goalscoring form with the Latics.
