Speaking to Bristol City’s official Facebook page, Lee Johnson has admitted that Barry Bannan would be the one player from the Sky Bet Championship he would like to bring to Ashton Gate.

Johnson, who has managed Bristol City since 2016, highlighted Bannan’s ability to “unlock” a defence as the reason why he would love to work with him.

The Bristol City boss also admitted that Gary O’Neil’s injury meant he would have to pick a midfielder, but his praise of Bannan showed the respect the Sheffield Wednesday midfielder has across the Championship.

Johnson said: "I'd probably go for a midfielder. Probably someone who can unlock a door.

"Someone like Barry Bannan. Just as somebody who has got that old-school vision.”

Bannan is currently a key part of Carlos Carvalhal’s squad at Hillsborough, and put in one of his most complete performances of the season last weekend against Leeds United.

The 27-year-old pulled the strings from midfield, with Leeds’ duo of Kalvin Phillips and Eunan O’Kane unable to stop Bannan imposing himself on the game, as his side stormed to a 3-0 victory.

That victory helped Bannan’s side into the top-half of the Championship table, but they still remain four points behind Johnson’s Bristol, who continue to impress.

The Robins have moved to fourth in the Championship table in recent weeks, with only Cardiff City, Wolves and Sheffield United ahead of them.

The Verdict

Johnson is clearly a fan of Bannan, who on his day, is amongst the most exciting talent on show in the Championship.

The midfielder has an eye for a pass, and his influence at Hillsborough against Leeds on Sunday highlighted just how impressive he can be if given time on the ball.

If Johnson could add a player of Bannan’s ability to his squad, Bristol’s chance of maintaining their excellent start would increase.
