Sunderland have drawn up a shortlist of four potential managers to replace Chris Coleman at the helm, according to a report by TEAMtalk.

After parting ways with Coleman last weekend, Sunderland have been linked with a number of potential managers but now they have devised a four man wishlist.

The first name on their list is Chris Wilder, who is currently at Sheffield United.

A Blades fan, Wilder won promotion with his team last year to send them back to the second tier and he has steered them to a respectable mid-table finish this season, despite looking set to compete for the play-offs for the majority of the campaign.

Sunderland are also considering Paul Cook after another impressive year for him.

After leading Portsmouth to the League Two title last season, Cook moved to Wigan and he has secured promotion for the Latics and possibly another title for himself if they hold onto top spot this weekend.

Michael Appleton, formerly of Blackburn and Oxford, is also on Sunderland's shortlist.

The 42-year-old is currently the Assistant Manager at Leicester City but could fancy a role as Head Coach.

The final name on the list is a surprising one: Anthony Hudson.

The 37-year-old is the manager of Colorado Rapids in the MLS and he is being considered for the role.

The Verdict

I am not sure that Cook would leave Wigan to drop down a division and join Sunderland when his project there is just getting started. Whether Wilder would drop a division too depends on the ongoing affairs behind-the-scenes at Sheffield United. Appleton could be a good option as he is both young for a manager but also experienced. Hudson is a complete wildcard shout and this would be a huge gamble.
