Neil Warnock has made a surprise statement on Cardiff City’s Sol Bamba, insisting he is a better defender than Liverpool’s latest recruit, Virgil Van Dijk, as reported by Sky Sports News’ Keith Downie.
News broke yesterday evening that Liverpool had agreed a deal with Southampton for Van Dijk to make the switch to Anfield, with a reported £75m transfer fee set to be exchanged between the two Premier League clubs.
Warnock, the current Cardiff City boss, has now claimed that Bamba is a better defender than the Dutchman, who is set to become the world’s most expensive defender.

Bamba has been key to Cardiff’s revival under Warnock during his time in Wales, with the experienced defender helping the Bluebirds avoid relegation last season, before playing a crucial role in their push for promotion in the Championship during the current campaign.
So far this season, the 32-year-old has made 24 appearances for Cardiff in the Championship, scoring three goals, which have helped Warnock’s side to third in the table heading into 2017’s final fixture.
Bamba was part of the Cardiff side who lost 4-2 to Fulham on Boxing Day, a result that resulted in the Bluebirds dropping out of the automatic promotion places.
Warnock’s comment is perhaps tongue-in-cheek, as Van Dijk has previously impressed in the Premier League for Southampton, whilst also representing Celtic.
However, it is hard to argue with how good Bamba has been this season, with the Ivorian defender a colossus for Cardiff.
If he can continue his impressive form, Bamba could be coming up against Van Dijk in the Premier League next season.
