Steve Bruce has stated he doesn’t believe Wolverhampton Wanderers are “over the line” in the race to secure promotion in the Sky Bet Championship, despite the Molineux outfit holding a nine-point lead over second.

Speaking to the Birmingham Mail, Bruce has been discussing the race for promotion in the Championship, with the Aston Villa boss referring to Wolves in one particular comment.

Bruce admitted it would take an almighty collapse from Wolves, but refused to admit that Villa’s rivals were over the line, he said: “I wouldn’t say it is nailed down.

“Let’s be fair, they would have to do a Devon Loch.

“It would have to be a major collapse. But I wouldn’t say they are over the line yet.”

Wolves were held to a 2-2 draw by Norwich City on Wednesday evening, which has helped to restore a nine-point lead at the top of the Championship table.

Whilst Wolves are continuing to set the pace at the top of the Championship table, Villa sit third, 13 points adrift of Nuno Espirito Santo’s side.

Bruce’s Villa have failed to pick up three points in either of their last two Championship fixtures, which has resulted in them dropping out of the top-two.

The Verdict

Technically, Bruce is right, however, Wolves are on their way to the Premier League, it is hard to see Nuno’s side getting caught during the run-in, even if they aren’t finding their best form.

Wolves have been by far the Championship’s standout side so far this season, and it would be some shock if they failed to secure promotion in May.
