Norwich City still retain an active interest in Vitesse defender Danilho Doekhi but they face even more competition for his signature, with Italian club Atalanta now joining the race according to De Telegraaf, via Football Oranje.

The Canaries were linked to the 22-year-old last week by Mike McGrath of The Telegraph, with Newcastle United and Rangers also named as teams who were looking at signing him this summer.

And now reports in Holland have confirmed the Canaries' interest in Doekhi, who has played all but two Eredivisie games for Vitesse this season.

Daniel Farke and his sporting director Stuart Webber look like they are targeting a new defender to add competition to the likes of Grant Hanley and Ben Gibson next season, but they face a stiff test if they are to add Doekhi to their ranks.

With Atalanta being the latest name to reportedly throw their interest into the mix, they can provide European football - perhaps the Champions League - next season, something that Norwich can't and that may put Norwich at the back of the list when it comes to his potential signing.

The Verdict

Norwich have a real battle on their hands if they want to try and tempt Doekhi to Carrow Road.

They may be able to offer regular first team football compared to the other teams, but you can imagine that the Dutchman would rather head to a team who will be competing in Europe next season like Rangers or Atalanta if their interest is firm.

We know that with Webber in charge though, Norwich have smart recruitment and he brought the likes of Teemu Pukki and Emi Buendia to Carrow Road, so if Doekhi doesn't arrive then a player of a similar quality probably will.
