Sunderland's pursuit of striker Will Grigg has been drawing the attention of Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony, a man never shy to express his views on social media.

Rumours that Sunderland were looking to place a bid of £200,000 for the Northern Ireland international were dismissed in the Sunderland Echo by their own chairman Stewart Donald, but MacAnthony still believes the transfer fee discussed is too low.

Grigg, who has five goals in 22 outings this season for the Latics, has just a year and a half of his contract to run. The Posh boss says even if he was to be a free agent in the summer, the fee would still be too low.

Responding to a Tweet from a fan, he said: "Behave buddy. Even if he had 5 months left on his contract it wouldn’t be a fair price. Just my opinion."

The 27-year old joined Wigan from Brentford in 2015 for a fee thought to be in the region of £1m. He hasn't settled in the Championship this season, but bagged 26 goals from 53 outings in all competitions last time out, including 19 League One goals in help Wigan to the title.

The Verdict

MacAnthony is right. £200,000 would be a derisory figure for Grigg, he's still in his prime and is a two-time winner of League One with 25 goals and 19 goals respectively. That sort of return in a division like League One is worth at least £500,000 if not more.

The fact he's not playing for Wigan is irrelevant. They'd be better loaning him out and getting that reputation back up with a view to a bigger fee in the summer.
