Sheffield Wednesday are interested in signing Mathew Olosunde this summer, a report from The Sheffield Star has claimed.

Olosunde will be a free agent this summer, with the right-back set to leave Rotherham following the expiry of his contract at the end of this month.

Like Rotherham, Wednesday suffered relegation from the Championship at the end of last season, and will be targeting promotion from League One during the 2021/22 campaign.

According to this latest update, Olosunde - who has one senior international cap for the USA to his name - is one of the candidates Wednesday have on their list of targets for the summer transfer window.

So would Olosunde be a good signing for Sheffield Wednesday? And is he a signing that they need to bring to Hillsborough?

We put asked some of our Football League World writers for their thoughts on that, and here, is a look at what they had to say.

Ned Holmes

This would be a fantastic signing for Wednesday.

I'd be surprised if Olosunde doesn't have Championship clubs in contact with him as the 23-year-old has certainly got talent and is now available on a free transfer.

If the Owls can win the race for him, that would represent a fantastic bit of business as they look to rebuild Darren Moore's squad.

What Moore needs is more quality at almost every position and Olosunde would certainly give him that at right-back.

Not only has he helped Rotherham secure promotion in the past but he's also shown himself as a quality performer at Championship level.

All in all, a good move if possible.

Reinforcements are needed at Hillsborough this summer, there can be no doubt about that after relegation.

A new right-back will be on the agenda too, which brings us to Olosunde.

At Rotherham last year he played consistently in the Championship. Of course, the Millers were relegated alongside Wednesday, so Darren Moore would be recruiting the 23-year-old for a League One campaign.

Olosunde managed to provide a decent bit of consistency at that level before with the Millers, so I’m in no doubt he could be a good addition for Wednesday as they flesh out their squad.

One key aspect about the American I like is his age. Wednesday have moved on some high earning players approaching their 30s this summer and they must be replaced by hungry young players looking to make an impact.

At 23, Olosunde has his peak years ahead of him. There’s potential for him to develop and be a long-term solution for Wednesday on the right flank.

It’s certainly worth a punt for Moore, although it’s only a small part of a big recruitment drive this summer.

Jacob Potter

You can understand their thinking with this potential move.

Olosunde has really impressed me whilst with Rotherham United, and he's clearly got his sights set on a move elsewhere, after leaving the New York Stadium.

He's previously been on the books with Manchester United, which is something that doesn't happen by chance, and he could be worth a punt for Sheffield Wednesday.

They're going to need players that are going to want to perform to a high standard, and Olosunde could be the player to do just that.

He's been a steady operator for Rotherham United in the Championship, and Sheffield Wednesday would have a solid defensive option on their hands if they struck an agreement to land his signature ahead of the upcoming league campaign.

This would be the ideal move for all parties involved this summer.
