Aston Villa are reported to be vying with Scottish giants Celtic and Premier League Swansea in the chase for 21-year old Yeovil Town defender Tom James.

The Bristol Post report that Steve Bruce's side are interested in the right back who moved to Huish Park from Cardiff City in January 2017.

The Independent suggested in March that James is a key target for Celtic in the summer.

James, who turns 22 on Sunday, has played 45 times for Darren Wray's side this year, helping them to the Checkatrade Trophy semi-final where they were eliminated by eventual runners up Shrewsbury.

He's also been a key component in steering the Glovers away from a relegation battle, with them currently 18th in the table, ten points clear of the bottom two.

James has one minute of Premier League football to his name, debuting for his hometown club Cardiff City against Chelsea on the final day of the 2013/14 season. After failing to break through he joined Yeovil, playing just three times last season.

This season he's broken through and has been producing several eye-catching performances which have drawn scouts from across the UK. He's a traditional right back, able to get forward but showing a real maturity beyond his tender years in the rough and tumble of League Two.

The Verdict

James is definitely a promising talent, but what I really like about this news is teams looking in League Two for players. I watch a lot of League Two football and some of the players are incredibly talented and deserve their chance on a bigger stage.

I think the youngster has already outgrown Yeovil and could well be primed for a summer move.
