Celtic have joined Nottingham Forest and Blackburn as the trio look to conclude a late deal for Newcastle's Christian Atsu.

The Ghana international has made 18 appearances for the Premier League side this season but the vast majority of those have been as a sub and he could drop further down the pecking order when the injury crisis at St. James' Park clears up.

Therefore, a move for the winger could be on the cards and it had been reported that Forest and Rovers were in for Atsu.

However, the Sky Sports Transfer Centre (16:42) revealed that the Glasgow giants have made an approach to the Magpies and that will be a blow to the two Championship sides.

Neil Lennon has been looking to strengthen his options before tonight's deadline and bringing in a wide man is seen as a priority.

The Parkhead outfit are in a title race with bitter rivals Rangers and the prospect of helping Celtic in the Europa League may give them the edge over Forest and Blackburn.

Any incomings involving English clubs have to be done by 11pm tonight, with Scottish clubs having an extra hour.

The verdict

It seems likely that Atsu will move on before the deadline and Celtic's interest is not what the Championship pair would have wanted to hear.

They are a big pull with their history and fan base, whilst the chance to play in Europe and win trophies will also appeal.

Nevertheless, Forest will feel they could offer Atsu Premier League football in six months so it will be interesting to see how this plays out.

To be fair to Sabri Lamouchi, Forest have made a few good additions this month so they wouldn't be in a bad position if this deal didn't get over the line.
