Dundee United will try to start a bidding war for Ipswich Town target Benjamin Siegrist and Celtic could take part, according to journalist Alan Nixon.
Reports on Monday revealed that Ipswich were weighing up a £350,000 bid for the United goalkeeper after his impressive form in the SPFL in 2020/21.
Siegrist’s current deal expires next summer and it is understood he is unlikely to sign a new one, meaning that the Scottish club risk losing him for nothing in 12 months’ time if they don’t sell him in the current window.
It seems things aren’t going to be straightforward for Ipswich, however, as Nixon has reported that United will look to start a bidding war for their Swiss shot-stopper.
It is understood that Celtic may take part in such an auction, hinting that the Scottish giants share the Tractor Boys’ interest in Siegrist.
The 29-year-old would be Ipswich’s third signing of the summer, continuing the fast start to life at Portman Road that CEO Mark Ashton has made as he looks to give Paul Cook the tools he needs to get the club back to the Championship.
20 facts about Ipswich Town’s top five most expensive signings – Are they true or false?
This may be a concerning update for Ipswich as you feel it’s going to be tough for them to compete with a club the size of Celtic.
The Scottish giants have had great success pinching players from their SPFL rivals over the years and it seems they’re hoping to do the same when it comes to Siegrist.
It’s would be no surprise if there’s other interest as well, with the 29-year-old impressing last term and likely leaving for a fairly nominal fee.
Ipswich will just have to hope that Siegrist will feel Portman Road will offer him the best chance to play regular first team football.
