Stoke City and Celtic are set to compete for the summer transfer window signing of Jack Stacey at Luton Town, The Scottish Sun have reported.

Stacey joined Luton from Reading in the summer of 2017, and has gone onto make 95 appearances in all competitions for the club, helping them win back to back promotions from League Two to the Championship during his two campaigns with the club.

Having been named the club's young player of the season during his debut campaign at the club, Stacey was last year named the club's player of the season as The Hatters secured a return to the Championship for the first time since 2006/07 season.

Those performances have now attracted plenty of attention, with both Stoke and Celtic interested in securing the services of the 23-year-old, who are both said to have made enquiries about a £2million move for Stacey.

A move to Stoke would see Stacey reunite with former manager Nathan Jones, who signed Stacey for Luton in 2017, before leaving Kenilworth Road to take charge at Stoke in January.

Stacey has just one year remaining on his contract with Luton, meaning he could leave the club for free next summer if they do not sell him now or tie him to a new deal soon.

The Verdict

This will be a worry for Luton.

Although they may be competing in the same division as Stoke next season, Luton are likely to be focusing on survival next season, while The Potters are expected to be pushing for promotion to the Premier League.

Celtic meanwhile will be competing for silverware again next season, while also embarking on another Champions League campaign, meaning that both these sides could be seen as more attractive propositions for Stacey than staying at Luton.

Stacey's already established ability and versatility, along with the fact that at 23-years-old he still has plenty of time to develop further, means that this could be a promising signing for either Celtic or Stoke should they be able to pull it off.
