Celtic have entered the race to sign Huddersfield defender, Tommy Smith according to a report from the Daily Mail.

The report also claims that Stoke City are interested in signing the 27-year-old who was unable to prevent his side from being relegated from the Premier League last season.

In total, Smith made just 15 appearances for the Terriers in last year's campaign, and seemingly did enough to impress potential suitors, with clubs registering their interest in signing him before the new season gets underway in August.

Smith captained Huddersfield to promotion from the Championship earlier in his career, and Stoke boss, Nathan Jones sees him as a player who could add something to his side.

Stoke struggled in the Championship last season, and finished 16th in the league table in their first season back in the second tier of English football.

Jones is evidently wasting no time in adding to his squad, and will be hoping that any new additions can aid their bid for promotion next season.

But they face a real battle on their hands to sign Smith, with Celtic now rivalling the Potters for the full-back, who has made 200 appearances for Huddersfield.

It was also revealed that any potential deal to sign him could be worth in the region of £3m, and the Scottish giants are expected to test Huddersfield with a bid for their captain.

The Verdict:

I think this could be a smart signing by Celtic if they manage to pull it off.

But Smith is a player in demand heading into the summer, and Stoke will fancy their chances at beating Celtic in the race to sign him.

I just can't see Celtic being able to offer him regular game time, which Stoke would, so the Bhoys face a real battle to land his signature.

He's good enough to be starting for Lennon's side, and they'll regret missing out on him if they don't get this deal over the line.
