Stoke City and Celtic are both interested in signing right back George Baldock from Sheffield United, according to a report from The Sun.

Baldock made 27 Championship appearances for the Blades last season as they won promotion to the Premier League for the first time in 12 years after claiming the Championship's second automatic promotion spot behind Norwich City.

It appears that Baldock's performances have now caught the attention of both sides, as they look for an alternative signing to Luton Town right-back Jack Stacey, who has joined Premier League side Bournemouth despite interest from both Celtic and Stoke.

Having joined Sheffield United from MK Dons in the summer of 2017, Baldock has made a total of 65 appearances in all competitions for the Blades, and is about to enter the final 12 months of his contract at Bramall Lane.

Baldock and Stacey aren't the only right backs to have been linked with both Celtic and Stoke in the current transfer window, with both clubs also said to be pursuing the signing of Huddersfield captain Tommy Smith.

The verdict

This could be a smart move for Stoke in particular.

It is no secret the Potters are undergoing something of a squad overhaul right now, and they will need replacements for those who are being moved along.

Baldock's experience winning promotion last season could be a useful addition at the bet365 Stadium as Stoke look to do the same next season, and with his contract set to expire next year, the Blades may be tempted to cash in on him while they can if he is not in their long term plans.

It may be difficult for Stoke to pull this off, however.

The financial strength of Celtic, and the appeal of playing for silverware and in the Champions League, could likely make the Scottish champions a tempting option for Baldock.
