Celtic have made the first move in the hunt for Luca Connell, offering a contract to the Bolton Wanderers star as reported by the Bolton News.

The 18-year-old is hot property this summer and has been linked with a switch to a number of clubs including Leeds United, Wolves, Sheffield United, Tottenham and Rangers. Those sides are now going to have to show their hand as the Parkhead giants have made the first move.

It's believed that the youngster is not at risk of walking away for nothing, with Celtic having to provide a firm offer to the administrators that is reflective of their valuation of Connell. It was thought he could leave for a meagre training fee, but that is not the case.

It's been quite a rise for the Republic of Ireland Under 20 international, who broke through at the University of Bolton Stadium this season under difficult circumstances. As controversy raged on behind the scenes, he turned in 10 competent Championship displays, attracting the attention of scouts everywhere.

He can play in defence or midfielder and despite his Eire youth honours, he is also eligible to play for England.

Bolton are currently the subject of a takeover bid, with administrators hoping to make a further announcement about the preferred bidder once the formalities are tied up by this evening's 4pm deadline.

The Verdict

Connell is going to move this summer, that's almost certain. He's got a new offer on the table but Bolton are stricken. They're going to need some money to remodel and as yet, we don't know what capital the new owner may or may not have.

Luca Connell is saleable and in truth, they won't miss him. He's only played ten matches and isn't integral to their side. That's not to say he isn't special, but they've yet to reap any serious rewards from his endeavour.

The only reward they may see now is cash, but that's going to be enough after the last 12 months.
