Celtic are the latest club to register their interest in signing Carlisle United defender Jarrad Branthwaite according to Football Insider.
Branthwaite has caught the eye with some impressive performances, and has made nine senior appearances in his breakthrough season with the League Two club.
It had previously been reported by Football Insider that Aston Villa were interested in landing his signature, although it remained to be seen as to whether a formal bid had been submitted by Dean Smith’s side.
Who should Branthwaite join in January?
Carlisle have been hugely disappointing in the fourth tier this season though, with the Blues currently sat 20th in the League Two table heading into the weekend’s fixtures.
Branthwaite’s current deal with Carlisle runs until the summer of 2021, so the League Two side are likely to stand firm in their valuation of the defender.
A move to the Scottish champions or the Premier League is almost certainly going to be a tempting proposition for Branthwaite, who will be keen to play at the highest level possible in his career.
But for now, Branthwaite will be focusing on continuing to impress with Carlisle heading into the festive period. They take on Cambridge United on Saturday, where they’ll go in search of an important three points to push themselves up the league table.
I think it’s only a matter of time before he leaves Carlisle United.
With Celtic and Aston Villa interested in landing his signature, for any young player it’s going to be a tempting proposition to play in front of bigger crowds, and alongside better players.
It seems highly unlikely that he’ll be anywhere near the first team for either side though, so he needs to consider his next move carefully, as it could make or break his career.
