Celtic are lining up a late deadline day move for Sheffield Wednesday striker Joran Rhodes, a report from Football Insider has claimed.

The Scottish champions were linked with a move for Rhodes earlier in the season, and it now appears as though they could be set to reignite that interest.

According to the latest reports, Celtic are set to make a fresh approach for Rhodes after failing to secure the signing of Christian Atsu from Premier League Newcastle, with manager Neil Lennon apparently keen to add to his attacking options.

Rhodes, who spent last season on loan at Norwich, has scored just 13 goals in 70 appearances in all competitions for Sheffield Wednesday since joining the club - initially on loan from Middlesbrough - in at the end of 2017 winter transfer window.

It is thought that Wednesday could be willing to let Rhodes head north of the border, if they are able to secure a deal for Crystal Palace attacker Connor Wickham.

There are 18 months remaining on Rhodes' contract with the Owls, securing his future at the club until the end of next season.

Wigan Athletic have been credited with an interest in Rhodes this month, while another Championship side - Cardiff City - are said to be targeting a late January move for the striker.

The Verdict

This is an interesting one.

While Celtic are clearly interested in Rhodes - as a number of other clubs have been - you do have to wonder whether his recent form for the likes of Wednesday and Norwich ought to be a concern.

Indeed, it does seem as though things just aren't going right for Rhodes at the minute, with even a hattrick at Nottingham Forest last month failing to kickstart his career with Wednesday.

It feels therefore as though Rhodes needs a significant change in order to turn his fortunes for the better, and you wonder whether he will be able to get the opportunities to do that at Celtic, if he is to be used more as backup than first choice during his time in Glasgow.
