Celtic are preparing an intriguing bid for Sunderland striker Josh Maja, sure to tempt the Black Cats that little bit more, according to the Scottish Sun.
Rather than just throwing money at Jack Ross, they’re willing to offer one of the two players Sunderland have been linked with this summer.
Lewis Morgan and Jack Hendry have both been the subject of speculation linking them with the Stadium of Light, with Brendan Rodgers now reportedly willing to use either as a makeweight in the deal.
Maja has been sensational for Sunderland this season, but his contract runs out in June and as yet, he’s refused to sign a new deal. That’s sparked fears he could walk away for free in the summer, but Sunderland don’t want to lose him for the upcoming promotion battle in League One.
Celtic could pick up Maja on the cheap if he signs a pre-contract agreement, similar to the way Moussa Dembele left Spurs for Parkhead, but it seems they’re keen to compensate Sunderland for their time and effort with Maja since he joined from Fulham as a youngster.
This could be the right deal for Sunderland. If they get Lewis Morgan and maybe £1m, then they’d surely be happy. After all, Maja could go for nothing in the summer.
He could even sign for very little right now and move in the summer. It’s a delicate bit of business that they need to conduct carefully.
