Celtic are readying an approach for Middlesbrough defender, Paddy McNair according to TEAMtalk.

It has also been reported by The Sun, that Sheffield United are also interested in signing the 24-year-old, who hasn't had the best of spells in the Championship recently.

McNair made 15 league appearances for Boro, as they missed out on a top six finish, which eventually saw Tony Pulis leave the club after his contract wasn't renewed.

Jonathan Woodgate has since been appointed as Middlesbrough's new boss, and he'll be hoping to assess his squad before deciding whether any players are surplus to requirements.

McNair had previously been with Sunderland, and was a rare bright-spark in a disappointing season as the Black Cats were relegated into League One.

Middlesbrough already have a number of strong options available to them in defence, and Woodgate could be tempted to cash in on McNair to fund other signings in other areas of his squad.

Celtic are believed to have made an enquiry into signing the defender, although it remains to be seen as to whether they will submit a formal offer to land his signature.

The Verdict:

This could be a really good signing by Celtic if he can hit the ground running.

McNair hasn't had the best of spells with Middlesbrough, and he could be tempted to start a new chapter with Celtic, who will be targeting a domestic treble again next season.

He's a versatile option to have in any squad, and I think he'd be a real asset to Neil Lennon's side if they can strike a deal with Boro for his services.
