Aston Villa

Celtic in transfer tussle for midfielder

Nick Powell has been catching the eye of many potential suitors, with Championship side Aston Villa reportedly in the queue for his signature.

The Sun reports (via Birmingham Mail) that although Villa are interested, they may be set to miss out after two other clubs joined the race, with Celtic and Brighton keen.

Former Manchester United player Powell is impressing after dropping into League One with Wigan.

He’s bagged 12 in 33 appearances this season as the Latics have marched towards promotion, as well as helping them to the FA Cup quarter final.

It’s been quite a turnaround for the former Crewe teenager who looked to have blown his big chance when he left Old Trafford upon expiry of his contract. He’s settled nicely at the DW Stadium though and has proven that form is temporary, class is permanent.

Villa manager is no stranger to Powell’s talents having taken the youngster on loan at Hull City, but he faces a fight if he’s to lure the player to Villa Park to work with him again.

Premier League Brighton launched a bid for him this January and are likely to still be monitoring his progress, but the Sun report also names Scottish giants Celtic as a potential suitor.

Powell is heading into the final year of his contract at Wigan and will undoubtedly attract more interest when the transfer window opens.

The Verdict

Whilst a choice between Celtic, Brighton and Villa might well be close, Brendan Rodgers can offer European football which would surely be a huge lure for Nick Powell.

Even if Wigan are promoted this season, I can see Powell moving on.

His value is high and he’s ripe not only for a big move, but also to be cashed in as Wigan look to consolidate in the big-spending Championship.

I’d be surprised if they sold to a rival, so Celtic does seem the likely destination.
