Celtic have slammed West Brom for the 'ridiculous' comments made by technical director Luke Dowling over the Glasgow giants treatment of Oliver Burke.

The Scotland international joined the Hoops on loan in January when Brendan Rodgers was in charge but he left for Leicester around a month later and Neil Lennon took over.

And, Dowling hit out at the way the new manager treated Burke and insisted the 22-year-old 'won't be going anywhere near Celtic' this window.

Unsurprisingly, that has angered the Scottish champions and they issued a statement on their official site responding to the criticism.

"These comments, which question the professionalism of both Neil and Celtic Football Club, are ridiculous and completely inaccurate. West Brom have made no contact whatsoever with either Neil or the club in relation to Oliver.

"As with every player who comes to Celtic, Oliver received the very best of treatment and every support and opportunity. We wish Oliver the very best for the future."

Burke will report back to Albion for pre-season as he tries to win a place in Slaven Bilic's squad after the Croatian took over earlier this month.

The Verdict

You have to say that Celtic are right to be unhappy with Dowling's comments here.

They brought Burke to the club in January and from then until the end of the season it's entirely up to Celtic and the manager as to whether he plays or not.

Lennon came in during a tough situation and had a title and a cup to win, which he did, and if he thought Burke would help then he would have played him but his decision is justified by how the season ended.

It's a shame for Burke that he didn't play more frequently but these things happen and the comments from Dowling lack class.
