Jack Ross has been open about his transfer plans, not expecting any big signings to come in, but also hoping that anyone going out can be replaced.

He does see a new face or two arriving no matter what else happens to the Black Cats, with someone expected in the next seven days. However, as they plot a route back to the Championship, Ross needs to be reactive and prepared for the worst.

The form of some of his stars is enough to cause delight on the terraces, but concern in the dressing room and if they're to finish in the top two come May, they'll need to ensure their best players remain at the club.

With that in mind, here's our three-point plan to the perfect transfer window for Sunderland...

Jack Hendry has been linked with a move to the club and that is the first positive to a perfect transfer window for Sunderland.

The 23-year-old Scottish international has all the attributes to play much higher than League One.

It's interesting that he plays as a centre half, the Flanagan and Baldwin pairing looks solid, but Glenn Loovens injury worries mean cover is essential.

Hendry would do more than cover.

If possible, the perfect window sees them make a crucial signing: Josh Maja on a longer deal.

The youngster has been a revelation this season and even if they lose him eventually, they'll be wanting a fair price. The only way to assure that is get him signed on a new deal with either a release clause for his peace of mind, or an agreement to listen to offers in the summer.

Losing him in January would be detrimental, but not catastrophic.

Ross may be looking for cover in certain areas and if that is the case, left back and keeper might be positions on which to focus.

The likelihood is someone will take Brian Oviedo, lifting the burden of a big wage and in that instance he needs to ensure the back up players are of sufficient quality.

There's enough in the top 14 players to be top six, but to be top two they need 16 or 17 all capable of doing a stellar job.
