Celtic have made an approach to sign Nathan Byrne from Wigan Athletic this summer.

According to Football Insider, Brendan Rodgers has identified Byrne as one of his top targets this summer, after the right-back impressed for Wigan last season in their promotion-winning campaign.

The 26-year-old started as a Tottenham trainee and has played for a number of clubs, but has excelled with Wigan, who he joined in 2016.

During his two years with the Latics, Byrne has made 65 appearances across all competitions.

Last year, he featured on 51 occasions across all competitions for Paul Cook’s side, helping them win promotion from League One to the Championship, as well as the latter stages of the FA Cup.

Byrne, who registered eight assists from right-back, also featured in Wigan’s impressive FA Cup victory over Manchester City back in February.

Despite his impressive form for Wigan, Byrne is entering the final year of his contract at the DW Stadium, with the Latics bracing themselves for interest in the 26-year-old this summer.

Celtic are considering following up their initial interest in taking the right-back to Scotland.

The Verdict

Byrne is an exceptionally talented right-back, who in the last 12 months has really developed.

He was influential to Wigan’s promotion last season and Cook will not want to lose him ahead of their return to the Championship.

For Celtic, he would prove to be a good signing and would bring real quality to Rodgers’ side.
