West Brom winger Oliver Burke, currently on loan with Scottish champions Celtic, can be 'exceptional' for both club and country according to his new boss.

The former Nottingham Forest man recently made a six-month switch to Parkhead after failing to make an impression on the West Brom set up this season. He made six appearances, only three in the Championship, but scored once against Luton Town in the EFL Cup.

Given his lack of game time he swapped the Hawthorns for Celtic and played the full 90 minutes as his new employers beat Airdrie at the weekend. Having seen the 21-year-old in action, Hoops' boss Brendan Rodgers revealed that he believes Burke can be sensational for both club and country.

"He can be an exceptional player, not just for Celtic or West Brom but for his country too," Rodgers told the BBC. "There's not too many players here who have the attributes he has - and can affect the game at the highest level."

The former Liverpool manager believes that he is the man to bring the best out of Burke, who made a £15m move to Leipzig as a teenager.

"We have to make his role clear. With young players worth a lot of money, sometimes they think they know the game.

"I love working with that kind of player to see if I can extract that bit more. I can see that with him.

"With that pace and power, hopefully we can give him another view of the game. That should see him improve as a player and, if he does, it'll be great for Celtic."

Despite the loan deal there is no 'option to buy' involved in the switch, with the Baggies seeing his long-term future laying with them in the West Midlands.

The Verdict

I agree firmly with Rodgers. Oliver Burke has experienced more as a player than most at his age, but he's never lived up to the promise.

He's still only a young boy though and he needs to be coached, played and loved. If he gets a couple of good outings under his belt in Glasgow, he'll be revered.

I can see him making the move permanent if he gets game time, no matter what the contract says. It's just the right environment for him to thrive.
