Barnsley have recently announced that they have taken up their option of extending Alex Mowatt's contract with the club until 2021.

The midfielder was due to be out-of-contract in the summer of 2020, but the Tykes have seemingly been impressed with what they have seen from the 25-year-old.

Mowatt has made 37 appearances in total for the Tykes in all competitions this term, and has been a rare bright spark in a frustrating season for Gerhard Struber's side.

Barnsley are currently sat bottom of the Championship table, and are seven points adrift of safety, which will make for concerning reading for the club's supporters.

However, that bid for survival has been put on hold for the time being due to recent off-the-field events, with no scheduled return date in place as of yet.

Barnsley forward Cauley Woodrow reacted to the news of the club extending Mowatt's stay at Oakwell, and was clearly delighted with the news.

Woodrow has been hugely impressive this season for Struber's side, with the forward netting 15 goals in 33 appearances for the Tykes, as they look to pull of an unlikely survival bid in the Championship this term.

The Verdict:

They're both going to be key players for Barnsley in their bid for survival this season.

Mowatt has kept thing 'ticking over' in midfield, and will be heavily relied upon to provide the creative spark in the Barnsley team in the final nine matches of this year's campaign.

Without Woodrow, I don't think Barnsley would stand a chance of surviving in the Championship, and I would be stunned if other clubs aren't to register their interest in his services heading towards the summer transfer window.

The Tykes are going to have to put together a positive run of results at the earliest of opportunities if they're to stand a chance of surviving in the second tier.
