Djed Spence's future at Middlesbrough is in doubt according to Scott Wilson of the Northern Echo, with the club aware of 'mounting interest' in a potential transfer move for the 20-year-old.

Spence was linked with a move away from the Riverside in the January transfer window, with Everton and Newcastle United credited with an interest, per TEAMtalk.

Initially played as a right-back when he broke through into Boro's senior ranks in late 2019, Spence has more often than not played as either a wing-back or a winger in recent times, with his attacking qualities seemingly far greater than his defensive ones.

And his defensive capabilities looked like they were called into question by manager Neil Warnock following the 2-1 loss to Queens Park Rangers last week, with the youngster apparently at fault for letting opposition wing-back Lee Wallace get free for the Hoops' second goal.

The Echo believe that up to three teams have been watching Spence recently but unlike Marcus Tavernier and Dael Fry - who Warnock has publicly stated won't be sold this summer - the right-sided player hasn't been afforded the same kind of support.

It looks increasingly likely that a deal could be done for Spence this coming summer - and from the reactions to the news fans don't seem too fussed if he's cashed in on.
