Sheffield Wednesday suffered a disappointing end to their campaign last season in the play-offs, as the Owls fell to defeat to eventual winners Huddersfield Town over two legs.

The South Yorkshire side have suffered play-off heartbreak on several occasions in recent years, with this defeat sure to have hurt in what was considered a relatively weak play-off field.

Boss Carlos Carvalhal came under pressure early this season following a less than impressive start, but has guided his side to within four points of the top-six, as they look to mount yet another promotion push.

Carvalhal knows that without delivering promotion this season his position at the club will be called into question, and has insisted that despite interest in his top players from the Premier League, the side will not be selling any players in the January transfer window.

“We are not planning on selling any players,” declared the Portuguese boss to The Sheffield Star.

“You never know the market (what can happen) but we are not planning on selling anyone.”

The Verdict

This is a bold claim by Carvalhal that could come back to bite him in January.

If someone comes in with a £10 million bid for Barry Bannan in the new year, there is no way the club could turn down such an offer.

Carvalhal has declared this statement in an attempt to appease fans and garner support from those questioning his position, but it is a risky move.

Nobody will leave Hillsborough in January for a pathetic fee, and perhaps this is what he is implying, amidst interest from Premier League sides.

On the flipside I expect several new faces at the club in the new year, with an injection of depth and quality in the squad needed if Wednesday are to mount a promotion surge.

Wednesday fans, do you think Carvalhal will be true to his word? Have your say below...
