After a slow start to the season, Sheffield Wednesday have recovered and look to be in a healthy position to finish in the play-off positions for the second consecutive season.
The heartbreak of falling just short in the play-offs did appear to have an effect at the start of the season when Sheffield Wednesday was 19th in the Championship, after five matches.
However, despite taking a more conservative approach compared to last season, Sheffield Wednesday have climbed the table once again.
With a five point gap over Fulham in seventh place, Sheffield Wednesday remain in a strong position to finish in the play-offs.
One difference compared to last season has been the standard of Sheffield Wednesday's squad which has drastically improved under Carlos Carvalhal's management.
The improvement in quality has seen some players who have joined the club this season find themselves on the outer fringes of the squad, as they have struggled to cement their place in the side.
Although some of these fringe players haven't made a big impact yet, they still could have a role to play in a tense run-in for the South Yorkshire side.
FLW writer Elliott Wheat-Bowen looks at TWO Sheffield Wednesday fringe players who Carlos Carvalhal is missing a trick not utilising....
Sam Winnall
One of the signings of the January transfer window was Sam Winnall who joined Sheffield Wednesday from Barnsley despite a number of Championship sides showing their interest.
Sheffield Wednesday had won the race for a striker who had scored eleven times in the Championship for Barnsley and it was expected that his goalscoring exploits would continue.
However, since moving to Sheffield Wednesday, Sam Winnall's opportunities have been severely limited and he has been on the margins of Sheffield Wednesday's squad.
Winnall has faced serious competition from Garry Hooper, Steven Fletcher and Jordan Rhodes for a place in the starting line-up.
Since making the move, Winnall has made only one start for Sheffield Wednesday with the rest of his appearances coming off the bench.
Compared to the rest of Sheffield Wednesday's potent attacking options, Sam Winnall offers something different with his willingness to run in behind and stretch defences, Carlos Carvalhal may be missing a trick not utilising him more.
Will Buckley
Will Buckley's spell at Sheffield Wednesday since making the loan move from Sunderland has been mired with injuries.
After colliding with Preston North End goalkeeper Chris Maxwell, Buckley suffered a shoulder injury which led to him being sidelined for over three months.
Over the past fifteen Championship matches, Will Buckley has only managed to make the matchday squad once in the 2-2 draw against Bristol City.
Due to shoulder surgery and the nature of the injury, Will Buckley has drifted to the fringes of Sheffield Wednesday's squad.
Although Will Buckley has suffered from injuries, there are no doubts about the talent of the former Brighton & Hove Albion winger who is an extremely consistent performer at this level.
Carlos Carvalhal would be missing a trick if he didn't utilise the 27-year-old winger who could well be excellent competition for Ross Wallace.
