Sheffield Wednesday are both blessed and cursed by the number of top attacking talents they boast in their impressive squad.

Manager Carlos Carvalhal is blessed in the fact that he has such an array of talent to choose from on a weekly basis, and can alter his front line based upon this week’s opponents and which of his attacking arsenal is best suited to finding a weakness in the opposition back line.

But the possession of such a large squad entails some extremely difficult choices, and the Portuguese boss must decide who to leave out from his starting line out.

With Gary Hooper, Sam Winnall, Jordan Rhodes, Steven Fletcher and Atdhe Nuhiu all vying for a berth in the first eleven, we at Football League World do not envy the man who must choose between these talented forwards.

However, if Carvalhal ever needed some advice, it has to be Rhodes and Fletcher who start the opener at preston next month.

Fletcher proved his quality at this level with 11 goals in the division last season, and it is very difficult to find another striker with his aerial ability.

The Scot is a menace at set pieces, and has the ability to play as a target man, which allows for faster, more adept finishers to get in behind the opposition back four.

This where Rhodes comes into the equation.

The forward has completed a permanent switch to the club for a multi-million pound fee, and won’t be coming to Hillsborough for a figure of that magnitude to warm the bench.

Rhodes is a prolific striker, and with the contrasting attributes both himself and Fletcher bring to the team, could form an interesting partnership ahead of Wednesday’s push for top flight football.

The former Blackburn man should easily be surpassing 15 goals a season, and if Fletcher can repeat his haul with the likes of Fernando Forestieri chipping in from a wider position, it is hard to look past the Owls for a top six finish.

Carvalhal has the luxury of rotating his front men and when a dip in form occurs, there will be those waiting in the wings ready to seize any opportunity.

Every striker at Wednesday is a quality member of the squad, but as we approach the start of the new campaign, Carvalhal should go forward with Fletcher and Rhodes as his primary striking weapons.
