Carlton Palmer singles out Sheffield Wednesday star following his performances for the Owls

Sheffield Wednesday fans haven’t had much to smile about this season, and it looks more and more likely that they’re heading for League One next season.

The Owls had to contend with a points deduction before the season had even begun, and they’ve worked their way through three permanent managers – the latest being Darren Moore to try and arrest the slide.

There’s been good moments in recent weeks, with an away win over local rivals Barnsley and a 5-0 thumping of Cardiff City being real highlights, but in the last few days Wednesday have slipped into their old ways.

They capitulated in the second half against Queens Park Rangers on Saturday to lose 4-1 and when a big result was needed against Swansea City last night, they faltered and succumbed to a 2-0 defeat.

There have been few players who have consistently played above average for Wednesday this season, but one man who never shies away from his responsibilities is Barry Bannan.

Are these 17 facts about Sheffield Wednesday’s club badge true or false?

The Owls skipper has played in every single Championship game this season and former Wednesday player Carlton Palmer has been suitably impressed by the Scot, not just in the current campaign but for his whole time at Hillsborough.

“I think somebody that has regularly performed for them has been Barry Bannan,” Palmer told FootballFanCast.

“I think he’s someone who’s always done well for Sheffield Wednesday since he’s come to the football club.”

The Verdict

He’s been at Wednesday since 2015, and Bannan showed loyalty to the club this season when Brentford were supposedly sniffing around by signing a new contract.

It would be a real shock to see the 31-year-old playing in League One next season as he’s a classy operator at Championship level, and Palmer is right in saying that he’s been a constant source of good performances.

Would he ask for a move away this summer if the Owls were relegated? Who knows, but Wednesday supporters will be hoping for another season of leadership from the number 10 next season regardless of what division they are in.
