Alex Mighten has recently returned to Nottingham Forest after it was decided that his loan spell at Sheffield Wednesday would be cut short.

The 20-year-old started seven league games for the Owls, adding a further two appearances from the bench, whilst he featured in five matches in different cup competitions.

As per a report from The Star, it was in fact the League One club who opted to cut his temporary move at Hillsborough short, with Sheffield Wednesday paying a significant proportion of Mighten's wages.

Asked if he was surprised about the club's decision to allow Mighten to head back to Forest, Carlton Palmer told Football League World: "He's not really set the place on fire. I think Sheffield Wednesday were hoping for a lot more. He's not going to help them to push on.

"I know he's a young kid, he needs to play and he's a talented young kid but at this moment in time, Darren needs players who are going to play now.

"It's an important part of the season. He's probably on good money at Nottingham Forest, so he'll have been taking up a chunk of Darren's budget.

"So it makes sense if he's not going to be a productive part of what he (Moore) needs to do from now to the end of the season."

The verdict

Mighten is an exciting prospect with a big future ahead of him, but amidst lots of talent at Sheffield Wednesday, he was unable to shine and earn himself regular minutes.

With Mighten taking up a significant proportion of the club's wages, it is no surprise that the League One promotion chasers have made this decision.

It also frees up a space in the squad for someone to come in who can make more of an impact than the young Nottingham Forest winger.

This January transfer window is a big one at the top end of League One, in what is proving to be a very competitive automatic promotion race.
